Welcome to StepUP: Downloadable form discussing Criteria and Basic Information
Many of you are aware of the growing popularity of a new class of medication called GLP-1 agonists. These medications go by names such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus. There are other medications like Mounjaro and Saxenda which have similar mechanisms of action. These medications can be used for weight loss (Wegovy and Saxenda) or for type II diabetes (Ozempic, Rybelsus, Mounjaro). Given the rise in publicity and popularity of these medications, we thought it would be wise to offer some additional information.
Our office prescribes these medications when appropriate. Unfortunately, many insurance companies will not approve of these medications unless certain requirements are met. Some insurance plans will not cover these medications at all (plan exclusion) even if a patient meets the criteria for them.
Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Mounjaro are only covered if you have a diagnosis of type II diabetes (and frequently, insurance requires a trial of an older, generic, less expensive medication first such as Metformin). Wegovy and Saxenda are FDA-approved for weight loss, but typically there are requirements for these such as needing a BMI over 30 and having tried other weight loss programs for at least 3 months. If you are interested in one of these medications, it is helpful for you to check with your insurance plan first to see if it is a plan exclusion or if it may be covered with prior authorization. Our prior authorization team will only process authorizations if you have a diagnosis that fits the criteria to ensure those patients who have an urgent medical need receive their medication timely. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your healthcare. Please reach out to our clinic if you have any additional questions or concerns.
