Dr. Koons has always had a strong desire to learn, which began at a young age in Philadelphia, PA, where she grew up. She attended Johns Hopkins University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in biomechanics, as well as minors in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, and Entrepreneurship. One of her most memorable experiences during her undergraduate years was a senior design project in which she and her team created an innovative prosthetic foot and ankle for female veterans, making it suitable for various activities from workouts to wearing high heels. The intellectual property and products were donated to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as a way to give back to veterans.

Her involvement in healthcare at Walter Reed intensified her desire to help others. She returned to Philadelphia for a postbaccalaureate program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) before applying to medical school. Before attending Sidney Kimmel Medical College (SKMC) at TJUH, she worked in their innovation department, becoming deeply involved with patent law and biomedical technology. She felt grateful to stay at TJUH, attend SKMC, and later complete her residency in Family and Community Medicine there. The program and mentors in her department reflected a strong commitment to helping everyone at every stage of life, and it was an honor for her to learn alongside them.

Throughout her years of education, she enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including gymnastics, English horseback riding (in which she competed in jumpers), rowing, and weightlifting. She loves learning new languages and experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen. Recently, she developed an interest in birdwatching and has been fortunate to observe the hummingbirds that visit her home. Although she will always be a Philadelphia Eagles fan and makes sure to catch their games every fall Sunday, she and her husband recently moved from the Northeast to Austin, Texas, along with their dog Brandy, and they continue to fall in love with the area.

Education: Doctor of Medicine, Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, PA

Residency: Family & Community Medicine Residency, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA

Specialty: Family Medicine

Clinical Interests: Joint pain and injections, obesity, hypertension, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus, celiac disease, IBS, skin tags/mole removal, warts and corn removal, female reproductive care (pap smears), preconception counseling, male reproductive health, lifestyle medicine and holistic medicine

Care Philosophy: “I have a strong belief in teamwork at the physician’s office. I love learning about patients’ goals, all while ensuring you are always up to date on health maintenance. My medical school and residency taught me to care for the full family from preconception planning, to delivering a newborn, to then caring for parents and children throughout all stages of life. While I no longer practice prenatal care, that knowledge follows me to best care for patients at all stages of life. I believe in transparency, and I will always be transparent with every person I meet. I learn something new every day, and that will never stop – especially in this ever transforming world of healthcare. I look forward to getting to know every patient and helping them along their health journey at any stage of life.”
